e-Prescribing of Controlled Substances

Secure and efficient controlled substance e-prescribing

E-prescribing allows healthcare professionals to write and send prescriptions securely and electronically to a patient’s pharmacy. This is especially useful when it comes to controlled substances, as electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) improves patient safety, reduces medication fraud and abuse, and is overall more accurate and efficient compared to paper prescriptions.

E-Prescribing of Controlled Substances Legal in 49 States

EPCS was first approved by the Drug Enforcement Agency in 2010, and it is now legal in most of the country (49 states and Washington, DC). Starting on March 27, 2015, EPCS will be mandatory in the state of New York for drugs in Schedules II through V. This means that healthcare providers who prescribe controlled substances to patients will need to do so electronically instead of on paper or by fax. Pharmacists will also need to be able to annotate, dispense and electronically archive controlled substance prescriptions using computer applications that meet federal security requirements.
